Popular video games developer Riot Games has revealed that its systems were recently compromised via a social engineering attack. The attack impacted its ability to release content, and it has since been confirmed that ransomware was used in the attack and that source code for several games was stolen. The company has reassured users that no player data or personal information was obtained in the attack. However, the stolen source code, which includes some experimental features, could lead to new cheats emerging.

Riot Games has confirmed that it received a ransom demand but has no intention to pay the attackers. It is currently working with law enforcement and has promised to publish a detailed report of the incident. According to Motherboard, the ransom note stated that the attackers stole the anti-cheat source code and game code for League of Legends and for the usermode anti-cheat Packman, and are demanding $10 million in return for not sharing the code publicly.

Ransomware Attacks and the Impact on Businesses
Chris Close, a cyber security expert from Cyber Sleuth Security Philadelphia, recently shared his thoughts on the increasing prevalence of ransomware attacks and their devastating effects on businesses.

“Ransomware attacks have become increasingly common and damaging for businesses,” Chris said. “They can cause significant disruption to operations and cost companies millions of dollars in lost data, productivity, and ransom payments.”

When asked about the best way for businesses to protect themselves from ransomware attacks, Chris replied, “The best way for businesses to protect themselves is to ensure that their networks and systems are up to date with the latest security software and patches. They should also have a comprehensive backup plan in place to help mitigate the effects of any ransomware attack.”

When asked what businesses should do if they do become victims of a ransomware attack, Chris said, “It is important to act quickly and work with a cyber security expert to assess the damage and identify the source of the attack. Companies should also consider whether or not they should pay the ransom, as this is an often difficult decision.”

Finally, Chris offered this advice to businesses: “It is important to be vigilant and take steps to protect yourself from ransomware attacks. Make sure your systems are up to date and that you have a comprehensive backup plan in place.”
